Cyber Monday and December: cheap hosting is paid in downtime
Cyber Monday 2025 is 1 December. Retail does not switch off: it turns into gifts, shipping, and returns. Anyone who survived the 28th on a six-dollar host discovers on the 3rd that the disk is at 94%, the certificate dies in ten days, and the “tech” is at the beach.
Hosting and cloud is boring until it is not. Restorable backups, CDN, monitoring, and a human in Costa Rica when checkout will not load at 21:00. December ecommerce is logistics more than campaign: every down minute is an order that went to the marketplace.
What has to be in writing
- RPO/RTO in one sentence: how much you can lose and how fast you return.
- Who gets the alert (not a generic info@ mailbox).
- Collection: if the gateway depends on a webhook, that endpoint is monitored too.
January is declared with December sales. A “cheap” site that died three nights was not cheap. It was a discount on reputation.
No servers of your own does not mean no invoice. It means someone else’s invoice still comes due.
If December scared you, quote hosting before the certificate actually expires. January is late for the post-mortem you could have skipped.
